Contributing to Healthcare in Far-Western Nepal 💐🏥

In a joint initiative by the Rotary Club of Patan and Nepal Heart Foundation, a week-long free heart screening and treatment camp was conducted in the far-western districts of Achham, Bajhang and Bajura. 👫👪During this camp, a 22-member team of health workers screened 13,172 individuals and provided treatment. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

In the camp, echocardiograms were performed on 1,052 individuals, and 121 children were diagnosed with heart diseases including rheumatic heart disease and congenital heart disease. 👶🏥 22 children were found to require immediate surgical intervention. We will be supporting these children by bringing them to Kathmandu for further treatment. 🚑

Along with screening and treatment, awareness programs on heart diseases were also conducted in various schools and locations. 🏫📚 The local community was educated about preventive measures for heart ailments. 🙅‍♂️🚭Such community health camps by Rotary Club of Patan have been making a significant contribution in providing healthcare access to people in remote areas. 🙏

On World No Tobacco Day 🚭, the Rotary Club of Patan partnered with the Nepal NCD Alliance to organize an Inter-School Oratory Competition 🗣️ in Kathmandu. The competition, themed "Protecting Children from Tobacco Use" 🚬⛔️, provided a platform for students 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓 to voice their perspectives on this critical issue impacting public health.

We were inspired by the eloquence and passion 🔥 exhibited by all the young participants as they advocated for creating a tobacco-free environment for children. Their powerful orations underscored the need for collective action to safeguard the well-being of our youth. 👍

Congratulations 🎉 to the winners who showcased exceptional oratory skills while raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption on children. We extend our appreciation 🙏 to all the participating schools for their support in making this event a resounding success.

The Rotary Club of Patan remains committed to initiatives that empower and inspire the younger generation 💪 to build a healthier, more sustainable future for our communities. We believe investing in our youth today will yield long-lasting positive impacts for tomorrow. 🌳🌎

Let's join hands to eradicate polio! 👫💉 The Ministry of Health in Nepal has launched a crucial inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) campaign, and they need our support. 🌟 As a community, we have the opportunity to play a vital role in protecting our children from this debilitating disease.

Polio is a highly infectious illness that can lead to permanent paralysis and even death in some cases. 😷 However, it is entirely preventable through vaccination. The IPV vaccine is safe, effective, and a key component of the global effort to eradicate polio. 🌍💪

Our Rotary Club has been requested to assist in promoting this vaccination drive. 📢 We urge all parents and caregivers to get their children vaccinated during this campaign. It is a simple act that can safeguard the future of our younger generation. 👶🛡️

Let's spread the word and encourage everyone in our networks to participate in this noble cause. 💬 Together, we can make a significant impact and contribute to a polio-free world for our children. 🌈

Stay tuned for more updates on vaccination camp locations and dates. 📅 Let's unite and ensure no child is left behind in this fight #EndPolioNowo#VaccinesWorkw#communityeffortCommunityEffort

Thought-provoking talk by Dr. Sanjib Shrestha 👨‍⚕️ at Rotary Club of Patan on the 'Moral Crisis for Medical Doctors in the USA' 🇺🇸💊

He highlighted how the corporatization of healthcare has alienated many doctors from their core purpose of caring for patients. 😰

With limited time for patient interaction, excessive data entry work, and pressure to meet commercial targets over focusing on patient care, many US doctors face a moral dilemma. Fighting with insurance companies and navigating a complex system add to the burnout. 😓

Dr. Shrestha, who worked in the US for over 25 years, shared his firsthand experience of this crisis. He advocates aligning doctor-patient interests so physicians can get back to their calling - caring for people's health. 💗

In countries like Nepal 🇳🇵, he finds the opportunity to serve more morally satisfying than the profit-driven US healthcare system. An eye-opening discussion on preserving the heart of the medical profession. 💖

Guest Speaker Dr. Sanjib Shrestha handed over a contribution cheque of NRs. 200,000 to the RCP's PEEF programme. 🤝 He has been a major donor who had earlier contributed NRs. 500,000 to this programme. 👏

💚 On April 18th, 2024, the Rotary Club of Patan conducted a clinical screening for heart conditions among 750 students from two schools in the Lalitpur districts - Lubhoo Secondary School and Harisiddhi Secondary School. The screening was carried out by a team of 👨‍⚕️ cardiologists, 👩‍⚕️ cardiac surgeons, and physicians using stethoscopes to check for abnormal heart murmurs.

358 students were identified for further evaluation through echocardiography testing, with 128 from Lubhoo SS and 330 from Harisiddhi SS. The screening found 11 students testing positive, with 1 student diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and 3 with congenital heart disease (CHD).

One student with CHD has been referred for surgical intervention at a hospital. 🏥 Another student received penicillin VK 250mg for treatment of their condition. 💊

This heart screening initiative is part of the Rotary Global Grant GG2347069 project undertaken in partnership with the Nepal Heart Foundation. Dr. Prakash Regmi provided an update on the project's status. 🙌

Dr. Prakash Regmi provided an update on the projects status. 🙌

👀 **Eye Care for Children in Schools** 👀

We're excited to announce a new partnership between B.P. Eye Foundation and Rotary Club of Patan to provide eye screening and treatment for students in government schools.

Through this joint initiative, we will conduct comprehensive eye exams to identify children suffering from refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Those diagnosed will receive free spectacles, to correct their vision.

Early detection and treatment of vision problems are crucial for a child's educational performance and overall development. This program aims to positively impact children by ensuring they can see clearly and reach their full potential.

In addition to eye care, the program will raise awareness about ear, nose, and mouth health issues, as well as promote the "Zero Plastic Waste Initiative" to create an environmentally conscious generation.

We look forward to working together and transforming young lives through this meaningful school outreach effort.
