Thought-provoking talk by Dr. Sanjib Shrestha 👨‍⚕️ at Rotary Club of Patan on the 'Moral Crisis for Medical Doctors in the USA' 🇺🇸💊

He highlighted how the corporatization of healthcare has alienated many doctors from their core purpose of caring for patients. 😰

With limited time for patient interaction, excessive data entry work, and pressure to meet commercial targets over focusing on patient care, many US doctors face a moral dilemma. Fighting with insurance companies and navigating a complex system add to the burnout. 😓

Dr. Shrestha, who worked in the US for over 25 years, shared his firsthand experience of this crisis. He advocates aligning doctor-patient interests so physicians can get back to their calling - caring for people's health. 💗

In countries like Nepal 🇳🇵, he finds the opportunity to serve more morally satisfying than the profit-driven US healthcare system. An eye-opening discussion on preserving the heart of the medical profession. 💖

Guest Speaker Dr. Sanjib Shrestha handed over a contribution cheque of NRs. 200,000 to the RCP's PEEF programme. 🤝 He has been a major donor who had earlier contributed NRs. 500,000 to this programme. 👏

This week at our regular meeting, we had the honor of hosting Rishi Ram Dhakal, President of the Spinal Cord Injury Network Nepal (SCINN). Mr. Dhakal gave an insightful presentation titled 'PWD (People with Disability) Living with Spinal Cord Injury in Nepal', shedding light on the challenges and experiences faced by individuals with spinal cord injuries in our country.

Through powerful visuals and personal stories, he highlighted the incredible resilience and determination of the spinal cord injury community. We learned about SCINN's vital work in advocating for accessibility, healthcare, and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

It was a humbling and eye-opening session that reinforced our club's commitment to supporting inclusive communities. We extend our gratitude to Mr. Dhakal for sharing his invaluable perspective and inspiring us to be part of the solution.

At the Rotary Club of Patan, we believe in creating lasting positive change and will continue to collaborate with organizations like SCINN to make Nepal a more inclusive society for all.

💚 On April 18th, 2024, the Rotary Club of Patan conducted a clinical screening for heart conditions among 750 students from two schools in the Lalitpur districts - Lubhoo Secondary School and Harisiddhi Secondary School. The screening was carried out by a team of 👨‍⚕️ cardiologists, 👩‍⚕️ cardiac surgeons, and physicians using stethoscopes to check for abnormal heart murmurs.

358 students were identified for further evaluation through echocardiography testing, with 128 from Lubhoo SS and 330 from Harisiddhi SS. The screening found 11 students testing positive, with 1 student diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and 3 with congenital heart disease (CHD).

One student with CHD has been referred for surgical intervention at a hospital. 🏥 Another student received penicillin VK 250mg for treatment of their condition. 💊

👀 **Eye Care for Children in Schools** 👀

We're excited to announce a new partnership between B.P. Eye Foundation and Rotary Club of Patan to provide eye screening and treatment for students in government schools.

Through this joint initiative, we will conduct comprehensive eye exams to identify children suffering from refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Those diagnosed will receive free spectacles, to correct their vision.

Early detection and treatment of vision problems are crucial for a child's educational performance and overall development. This program aims to positively impact children by ensuring they can see clearly and reach their full potential.

In addition to eye care, the program will raise awareness about ear, nose, and mouth health issues, as well as promote the "Zero Plastic Waste Initiative" to create an environmentally conscious generation.

We look forward to working together and transforming young lives through this meaningful school outreach effort.
