Menstrual Health and Dignity

Menstrual health and hygiene form part of the Rotary Club of Patan’s TEACH work to support students and school communities. Our documented work includes school awareness activities, research with students and development of teaching resources, with contributions from Rotarians and the Rotaract Club of Patan.

Building on our school work

2018 — Awareness through WASH. The club’s annual report records MHM Day awareness programmes at Kitini and Harisiddhi schools. Its wider school WASH work also included assessment of students’ health and hygiene practices.

2019 — Learning with partners. The club newsletter records Gabriele Mallapaty, Mahendra S. Rawal and Prabhav/Splash partners participating in a menstrual hygiene workshop associated with HECAF and GIZ.

2023 — Listening to students and developing resources. Research at Shree Siddhi Mangal Secondary School involved 56 girls in grades 6–12 and 10 boys in grades 9–10. Surveys, focus groups and small-group activities explored practices and perceptions surrounding menstruation to inform a training package. These figures describe research participants, not a training beneficiary total.

The research team included Hannah Schwarz, a Cornell University graduate student, and Rotaract Club of Patan members Sandhya Chaulagain and Hricha Aryal, supported by Rotarians Ganga R. Gautam, Mahendra S. Rawal and Khadak S. Bisht.

2024–2025 — Girls’ empowerment and training. The club’s published reports record girls’ empowerment activities that included menstrual hygiene training under its PEEF and TEACH work.

2025 — Awareness at Lubhu School. Lalitdhara’s September 2025 report records a menstrual hygiene awareness programme at Lubhu School in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Patan and with support from Rtn. Ganga R. Gautam.

Teaching resources

The club’s curriculum development work covers puberty, menstruation, personal care, menstrual products, experiences and challenges, and supportive roles for girls and boys. Resource development and review are part of this history; the records do not yet establish how widely the full training package has been used.

Our next phase

The club is working to strengthen Menstrual Health and Dignity within TEACH. Details of the recurring programme, including school coverage and delivery dates, will be published after approval.
